UMAFS Market Review Week Ending 4/7/2017
This week’s jobs report showed that nearly 98,000 jobs were added to the economy in March. The number came in below expectation causing economists to question the reason. It is believed that the lower number is partially due to an unseasonably warm January and February. By March, the sectors that previously benefited from the warmer weather had already added seasonal jobs. The three-month trend remains healthy as our economy moves closer to full employment.
The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) released the minutes from their most recent meeting. The minutes reveal a growing consensus to address the central bank’s $4.5 trillion balance sheet. Provided the economy continues to perform as expected, most members of the committee thought it would be appropriate to begin shrinking the balance sheet before year end.
Looking forward, we are entering earnings season and expect corporate earnings releases to drive share prices in the coming weeks.
