The last few days have been tough for global equity markets.  While there seems to be no single catalyst for the selloff, headlines abound regarding slowing global growth and increased volatility; volatility we haven’t seen since Standard and Poor’s downgraded the U.S. credit rating in October of 2011.  In some ways, the increased volatility could be just as much a reflection of the fact that volatility has been very low for some time.  As of August, the S&P 500 had gone more than 1300 days without a 10% or greater sell-off, which is about 5 times longer than the historical average.  Unfortunately, these stock market selloffs are a fact of life for long-term investors as markets do not move just in one direction.  Anxiety is a completely natural response to these events but acting on this emotion can end up doing more harm than good.  Ben Carlson, a regular Yahoo! Finance contributor, put together a great piece on how to best allay some of these concerns.
