Market Review Week Ending: June 16, 2017

As anticipated, the US Federal Reserve met this past week and made the decision to raise interest rates by .25%. This now put’s the Fed’s target range for interest rates between 1% and 1.25% and makes it the second interest rate hike in 2017.  Fed Chairwoman, Janett Yellen, also presented a plan to reduce the size of the reserve’s balance sheet. The timeline for this reduction will likely span the next 5 years.

Looking overseas, China has released some encouraging data over the last couple of weeks that shows positive trade and domestic retail sales numbers for their economy.   This information is important for investors, given the critical role that China plays in Emerging market economies.  

Lastly, oil prices broke below $45/barrel this week as growing gasoline stockpiles drove the prices down.  Despite a growing global demand for oil, increasing efficiency by US shale production of oil is creating downward pressure on prices.
